"L`ECHIQUIERE" DUALITY BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE
The opposion between black and white
For a long time, Alain GAUDRY used his creativity on movie sets. Decorator, creator of ephemeral spaces, he was a nomad in this fictional sightseeing, playing with shadows and lights to create dreams and illusions. Then; at the feet of the great Causses, it is in the strict atmosphere of the Cevennes that he follows his artistic quest as a sculptor: « L'ECHIQUIERE » is just like his personal journey : a work of art living in contrasts and finding its oneness between black and white, male and female, austerity and sensuality.
In a game of logic and ingenious strategy, Alain GAUDRY created his own battle scene. On a chess board built according to absolute regularity, he dreams shapes and contours. Chess mate : the king and his subjects are done governing without sharing on this manly universe. Two female armies take possession of the field, guided by conquering female warriors.
We almost could believe that the « L'ECHIQUIERE » exalt full feminism. But the work does not escape the ambivalence of his creator's sight, of his fantasies and of his own duality male/female. Women masters and winners, yes, but also fragile and compromising women, lost in their folly. As much as it carries the opposition black/white, each figurine wears the delicate mix of strength and weakness, of virility and feminism.
The royal warrior brings her arm in the air, inciting her friends to fight ; but her cut right arm leaves the command suspended. The knights wait for the signal, their bodies vigilant, their posture conquering... but their hands deep in the horse's mane, suggesting letting go. The rooks show a proud strength, their stand being reassuring, but who do they want to hold on to in their maternal hug ? The pawns are round and sweet, keeping whole their deliciously feminine seduction. The bishop is naked, following the picture of a break between spirit and flesh, one finger pointing toward the heavens, and one finger pointing towards the earth: The queen abandons herself to her animal sensuality, the smooth shapes of her body created by the hand of the artist. For her, he chose a material more sensual but rougher in the same time to express the ambivalence of sensual games !
Therefore, in « L'ECHIQUIERE », the female fight is only for the show and victory is without importance. Through this work, Alain GAUDRY ask with talent and finesse the sinuosity of the relation man/woman and the one more intimate of one's personal duality.
